Thick-wall pipe is not a hollow version of a solid bar. The blade enters one wall, runs through air, then hits the far wall: an interrupted cut. Too few teeth working in the wall thickness means shock, stripped teeth, and drift. Too many teeth pack chips in a short kerf and lift the blade. If the pipe is not clamped, or feed collapses after the first wall breaks through, the blade is pinched or twisted and can crack at the weld or tooth roots. Report outside diameter, wall, material (carbon steel, stainless, alloy), and the old specification—not just “cutting pipe.”
Tooth contact comes before the alloy name
Shop practice is that enough teeth should work at once in the wall (the thickness that is actually being cut). Too few teeth shock; too many cannot clear chips. That is not a fixed TPI you can copy without OD, wall, and whether you cut bundles. A large, thin-wall tube and the same OD with a heavy wall usually need different pitches. Variable pitch is often used on pipe and profiles because one revolution sees both thin wall and thicker contact. Fit still depends on the wall range; “pipe means variable pitch” is not a rule you can skip checking. For chipped or stripped teeth, see Tooth Stripping and Early Wear.
Clamping: do not crush the pipe, and do not let it spin
- Clamp close to the kerf on both sides so each wall is supported after breakthrough and the tube cannot collapse onto the blade.
- Do not squeeze medium- or thin-wall pipe out of round. Distorted wall ruins tooth contact.
- V-jaws or pipe fixtures usually beat a flat pad, but they still have to match OD. One scrap block is not universal.
- A pipe that rotates or walks in the cut scrapes scale on every tooth, shortens life, and encourages crooked cuts.
- For bundles, cinch and pack the load so lower tubes cannot roll after the upper ones are cut.
Feed: breakthrough is not the moment to let go

FAQ
Should I pick TPI as if thick-wall pipe were solid bar?
Do not treat OD as solid. The cut thickness is the wall (and the pack thickness for bundles). OD mainly changes the air gap and clamping. It does not set pitch by itself.
The blade chips on the weld seam. What now?
Welds and heat-affected zones are harder and less uniform. Start off the seam when you can; if you cannot, reduce feed and say there is a weld on the RFQ. Do not keep proving the next pipe with missing teeth.
Is tighter hydraulic clamp always better?
Clamp until the pipe cannot spin or walk. Crushing changes wall and roundness, so tooth contact and the cut both get worse.
Can I cut thick-wall carbon pipe dry?
Some shops do. Interrupted cutting overheats tips faster; life is usually shorter than with coolant. State the coolant method on the RFQ; do not reuse wet parameters.
