New band saw teeth are sharp and contact the work on a very small area. Full production feed puts that load on the tip, so corners chip and every later cut runs rougher. Break-in (run-in) is controlled cutting that forms a narrow wear land, then feed is raised in steps. How long that takes depends on material, section, and the saw. There is no minute count that is safe to copy without looking at the job.
Why break-in exists
- It lowers the chance of chipping on the first cuts. See tooth stripping and early wear.
- Left and right teeth and set come into work more evenly, which reduces crooked cuts.
- It reduces early root cracks that become broken blades. See Why Does a Band Saw Blade Break?.
- Wood TCT tips also should not hit knots or embedded metal at full load on the first pass.
Common shop practice
A typical starting point is: keep blade speed in the usual range for that material, drop feed well below production feed, cut for a period or several pieces, then raise feed in steps. Some shops instead start on a smaller section and stay off scale and welds. These are starting points, not a DEKOLY factory rule. If the saw has a feed dial, record the break-in and production settings so the crew can repeat them.
Stay in a continuous cut during break-in. Do not polish the same work-hardened face. Stainless especially should not dwell in the kerf. Use the same coolant method you will use in production so the two regimes are not unrelated.
When to break in again or stop

What bad break-in looks like
The usual pattern is chipped tips on day one, then more feed to compensate, then a crooked noisy cut, then a broken band. The opposite error is feed so light for so long that the blade glazes and hardens the surface. If it glazes, make the teeth enter again—do not keep rubbing.

FAQ
Do wood blades need break-in too?
Yes. Neither carbon wood blades nor TCT should hit hardwood or knots at maximum feed on the first cut. For short curve cuts, at least keep nails and frozen stock off the first pass.
The saw has no feed dial. How do I break in?
Reduce feed by feel until it is clearly lighter than normal, cut a few pieces while you watch chips and sound, then increase. Record approximate length or piece count so the shift can repeat it.
How long should break-in last?
There is no universal metre count. Small, soft sections are often shorter; large sections, stainless, or scaly stock often take longer. Judge by a light land on the tips, no chipping, and a stable kerf—not a fixed clock.
We skipped break-in and already cut a batch. Should we go back and do it?
If teeth are intact and the cut is normal, do not drop feed just for the ritual. If tips already chipped or the face is glazed, stop and assess; a token break-in will not repair that.
