How to Choose Band Saw Blade Width and Thickness

Width is how much the blade resists bending in the cut, and it also limits how tight a wood curve can be. Thickness is how hard the band works as it flexes around the wheels, and whether it will enter the guide slot you already have. Too wide and the blade may not track, or the guides cannot hold it. Too narrow and a straight cutoff wanders. Too thick fatigues sooner on small wheels; too thin buckles and drifts. Width: you cannot maximize stiffness and curve at once

  • Straight metal cutoff, thick-wall pipe, and solid bar usually want more width so the band yields less under feed. “More width” still has to fit the wheels and guides.
  • Wood curves and narrow resaw throats usually want less width, or the blade will twist and crack at the back or gullets; see Why Does a Band Saw Blade Break?.
  • Portable saws often accept only the width that machine specifies; see Portable Band Saw Blade Buying Guide.
  • “It broke, so order wider” can track worse on a narrow guide or a narrow tire, and the cut may drift more; see Crooked Cuts.

If you do not know the current width, measure gullet to back on the old blade, or photograph the guide opening, and send it per What If I Do Not Know Blade Size?.

Thickness: it must pass the guides and survive the wheels

Thickness has to enter the gap between the guide blocks without becoming a sharp fold on the wheel. Small wheels and a path with more reverse bends fatigue a thick band sooner. Production saws with large wheels and wide guides are where thicker bands are more often discussed. Use the millimeters on the old blade and the machine; do not copy a “this wheel diameter requires that thickness” line from an article as a factory rule.

FAQ

Does a wider blade always break less?

If the guides and wheels can take it, a wider band is stiffer in a straight cut. If it is wider than the guides allow, tracking suffers and side load can rise, so breakage may not fall. Measure the guides before you add width.

Can I order “a bit thicker” for stability?

No. Extra thickness may not enter the guides, or it may fatigue early on a small wheel. Use the old thickness and the guide gap.

Is width logic the same on metal saws and wood saws?

Both must match wheels and guides. Metal cutoff more often goes wide for a straight cut; wood also needs a narrower band for the smallest curve. Do not copy a metal cutoff width onto a curve-cutting wood saw.

We only know length, not width or thickness. Can you quote?

You can start an RFQ, but width and thickness still have to be filled in. Length alone does not tell whether the blade will enter the guides.
