Carbon, bi-metal, and carbide-tipped (including wood TCT) band saw blades are not grades of the same tool. Carbon is built for flexibility and lighter duty, bi-metal for general metal cutting, and carbide for high-abrasion or harder stock when the job actually needs it. Start from material, shape, output, and the machine. A “must use this class” claim is not reliable until you have the old blade and saw details.
What each construction is for
- Carbon blades: common on wood, some food cutting, and light-duty work. Tooth and back are one steel. They are not a default production blade for ferrous cutoff.
- Bi-metal blades: high-speed-steel tips on a flexible back—the usual construction for carbon steel, tube, profile, and solid bar. What M42 can cut still depends on the workpiece; see What Can M42 Bi-Metal Cut?.
- Carbide / TCT: carbide tips. Wood TCT is used on rosewood, hardwood, and other abrasive lumber; the process is more involved, see Why TCT Wood Band Saw Blades Cost More. Carbide metal bands exist in the industry for harder alloys or higher volume. Whether that applies must be confirmed from material and machine; do not order from the name alone.

Do not order from the material name alone
“Stainless,” “hardwood,” or “frozen meat” is not enough. Add size, solid vs hollow, saw model, and the current blade specification or a photo. TPI guidance is in How to Choose Band Saw Blade TPI. The spec format is in How to Read a Band Saw Blade Specification.
Collect parameters in Blade Finder or send an RFQ. The same material at a different section or output may stay on bi-metal or may need another construction—the field data decide.
FAQ
Does stainless steel always need a carbide band?

How do I choose carbon wood blades versus wood TCT?
Softwood, intermittent cuts, or curves often start with a standard wood blade, with tooth hardening as a separate question. Rosewood, hardwood, and abrasive breakdown more often raise TCT. The saw and the old blade still decide—not the lumber’s retail name.
Can a carbon blade cut steel tube?
Production tube cutoff does not treat carbon blades as the default. Occasional, light, non-production cuts are a different case and still need tube size, wall, and machine details.
I already have an old blade. Do I still pick a type from scratch?
The old blade is the main reference. Confirm whether it is carbon, bi-metal, or TCT, then say what failed (life, drift, stripped teeth). Most cases are a spec or machine adjustment, not an immediate class change.
