Abnormal noise and vibration you can feel mean the blade is not tracking smoothly on the wheels and through the guides. Wrong tension, worn tires, loose or pinched guides, and an unclamped workpiece are more common than “order a thicker blade.” Stop first if the band is climbing off a wheel, a guide is missing, or you can see a crack—then deal with squeal and rumble. Vibration is often a warning for breakage and crooked cuts. It is not background noise to ignore for the rest of the shift.
Where the noise is coming from
- A regular slap: the weld bump hits a guide or a wheel joint, or the weld is not flush.
- Squeal or whistle: tension too high or too low, the band slipping on the tires, or dry guide blocks.
- Low rumble with the frame shaking: bearings, an out-of-balance wheel, or loose feet.

- A food saw that gets loud after washdown: tension and tires are wet or icy, and tracking is already lost.

Guides set too far from the work let the band vibrate like a string. Move them in, then check block wear. Grooved, cracked, or packed tires make the blade bounce. On metal saws, look for chips in the wheel cavity; on wood saws, packed dust on the tires.
Safety first
If you see a crack, missing teeth, or the band climbing the rim, stop. Do not “listen to guess how much life is left.” Missing teeth and back cracks turn vibration into a break with little warning. FAQ
Are new blades always louder until they are broken in?

Will more tension always kill vibration?
Sometimes it stops slip. Too much tension scores the back, creates a different squeal, and can break the band. Adjust until the blade tracks without overheating—not “as tight as it will go.”
Is a loud narrow wood blade normal on curves?
Narrow blades vibrate more easily, but a steady slap still points to tracking, tires, guides, or a width that is too wide for the radius. Do not raise RPM to mask the sound.
A food saw got noisier after cleaning. What should we do?
Dry the wheels and guides, reset tension, confirm the band is in the tire groove, then listen at idle. Starting with water or ice on the wheels is a hygiene issue and a tracking issue.
